Pulpwood
(Trade agreements determine size and quality.)

In compliance with the requirements set in the long-term trade agreements, it may differ from the pulpwood standard, nonetheless it must functionally meet the pulpwood standard, namely be logs and split-wood suitable for cellulose and mechanical pulp production.

Tree species to be used:
Scots and Austrian pines, hybrid and native poplar species and willow or other soft deciduous tree species.

Size and size classes:

Length:
The basic sizes are 1.00 and 2.00 m +/- 3.0 cm , but usually 2.00 m for conifers and 1.00 m for poplar and willow species. 2.00 m is suggested for hybrid poplar. Other lengths are possible upon request.

Diameter:
Varies according to the prevailing transport contracts. At present, for conifers, the diameter including the bark can be 8.0 to 30.0 cm and without bark from 7.0 to 25.0 cm. These values are measured at the thinner end of the log.
For poplar and willow species, diameter varies between 8.0 and 30.0 cm. Over 30 cm, wood must be split so as not to exceed chord and radial size of 30.0 cm.

Diameters may differ according to customer needs.

Measurement/determining quantity:
(Commercial unit of measurement: stacked metre)

Conifer pulpwood of 1.00m length including bark:
1.00 stacked metre = 0.54 m³;
Size of a 1.00 m³ stack: 100 × 100 × 185 cm.

Conifer pulpwood of 1.00m length without bark:
1.00 stacked metre = 0.67 m³;
Size of a 1.00 m³ stack: 100 × 100 × 149 cm.

Conifer pulpwood of 2.00m length including bark:
1.00 stacked metre = 0.50 m³;
Size of a 1.00 m³ stack: 100 × 200 × 100cm.

Conifer pulpwood of 2.00m length without bark:

1.00 stacked metre = 0.62 m³;
Size of a 1.00 m³ stack: 100 × 200 × 81 cm.

Other sizes of conifer pulpwood including bark (1.25; 1.70 m):
1.00 stacked metre = 0.53 m³

Poplar and willow pulpwood of 1.00m length including bark:
1.00 stacked metre = 0.63 m³;
Size of a 1.00 m³ stack: 100 × 100 × 159 cm.

Poplar and willow pulpwood without bark:
1.00 stacked metre = 0.72 m³;
Size of a 1.00 m³ stack: 100 × 100 × 139 cm.

Name of pulpwood must include the name of the tree species, the quality and length (e.g. 2.00m conifer pulpwood including bark).

Miscellaneous pulpwood
(Size and quality determined by commercial agreements.)

Miscellaneous pulpwood differs from the pulpwood standard, but meets the requirements of long-term commercial agreements. Its function also departs from the pulpwood standard. Miscellaneous pulpwood is a high quality raw material used for particle board manufacturing which both meets pulpwood for board and pulpwood quality standards.

Tree species to be used:
Scots and Austrian pines and other conifers, hybrid and native poplar species, willows and other soft, deciduous tree species.

Size and size classes:

Length:
Basic size: 1.00 and 2.00 m +/- 5.0 cm. That is 2.00 m for conifers,
1.00 m for poplar and willow species. Other lengths are possible upon request.

Diameter:
Varies according to the prevailing transport contract. At present, the diameter without bark at the thinner end is at least 8cm and the diameter with bark at the wider end is a maximum of 36cm. However, up to 30% of the contracted quantity may have a diameter of 4 to 8 cm.
Soft, deciduous tree species may have a diameter with bark ranging from 4 cm at the thinner end to 36 cm at the thicker end. There are no set proportions (%) for size variation, but the whole order must be produced, stockpiled and prepared for transport at the same time.
Diameter may differ from the above values according to the customers’ needs.

Quality:
Pulpwood should have healthy heartwood and sapwood and should be straight (length of the bend should be less than 30cm of the curvature). It should be cylindrical, knob-free and the cutting surface on the butt-edge should be perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. Wood should be free from fungal decay, stains or other foreign material. It should not be derived from standing dead trees. It should be harvested no more than 3 months before shipping, in order to maintain the minimum required moisture content.

Measurement/determining quantity:
(Commercial unit of measurement: stacked metre)

Conifer pulpwood of 1.00m and 2.00m length including bark:
1.00 stacked metre = 0.54 m³;
Size of a 1.00 m³ stack: 100 × 100 × 185 cm.

Poplar and willow (and other soft, deciduous species, except linden and birch) pulpwood of 1.00m length including bark:
1.00 stacked metre = 0.63m³;
Size of a 1.00 m³ stack: 100 × 100 × 159cm.

Name of miscellaneous pulpwood should include the tree species, quality and length (e.g. 1.00m miscellaneous soft, deciduous pulpwood including bark.)
