Afforestation

Increasing forested land area is of national economic importance. The National Forest Strategy aims to achieve 25% forest cover in Hungary by 2025 for which 800 000ha of new forest must be planted. Thus, the forested land area of the Danube-Tisza Interfluve may increase by some 100 000ha. Most of the new afforestations are carried out on private lands.

In the last decade, more than 6 300ha were planted by KEFAG Zrt for private owners in Bács-Kiskun, Csongrád and Pest counties. In order to gain national and EU funds, we prepare expert site surveys and final afforestation design plans required for the authorization procedure. The complete afforestation procedure, from planning to implementation, is carried out for private owners by our affiliate, Kiskunsági Erdő-Gazda Ltd, in close cooperation with the experts at KEFAG Zrt.

Land that has been under agricultural cultivation over the previous two years is eligible for EU financing. If the site conditions are not unsatisfactory, for example very poor soil conditions or risk of flooding, we will afforest the land, from site surveys through to the completion of the project. Costs of afforestation are paid from the plantation, care and other grants the owner has won. Once the area has been forested, we pay compensation support to the customers in the form of rent.

The diagram clearly indicates the change in financing. In the years before Hungary’s accession to the EU, forest owners had stopped planting, thus planted area had decreased. However, interest in planting was renewed after the initiation of co-financing.
